You might have a lot of questions about what a professional organizer does and what the process might be like working with one. Hopefully, the following will answer all of your questions. If not, sent me a message with your question(s) and I’ll answer you and add it to this page.
What is a professional organizer?
The National Association of Productivity and Organizing professionals define it as:
A Professional Organizer supports evaluation, decision-making, and action around objects, space, and data; helping clients achieve desired outcomes regarding function, order, and clarity.
As a member of NAPO, I agree with this definition.
What does a professional organizer not do?
A professional organizer does not insist that you throw away your possessions. They are yours to decide if you want to keep or not, we are here to help you evaluate your needs. We are not a cleaning service. Yes, in the process of decluttering we might need to clean an area before we put things away, but our purpose is not to help you clean your space. We are not decorators. We might have some suggestions on decor changes or give advice when asked.
What a Professional Organizer help you accomplish?
We can help you with decluttering areas of your home, organizing your possessions, downsizing to a smaller home, estate clean outs, special projects, and digital organizing.
What if I need help with my whole home/life?
We can help you with any area of your home or life that needs more order or routine. Keep in mind that through the process you will learn a great deal about organizing, and after a few areas, you might feel you have learned enough to tackle the rest yourself. We do offer consultation to assist you if you run into problems.
What will the process be?
We will start with a phone discussion of your needs. If that goes well, we will meet for an on-site assessment. At the assessment, we will review what areas of the home you would like to organize. Provide you with an estimate for the approximate amount of time required. Then we will get to work!
What should I do to get ready for the on-site assessment?
Please do nothing. We need to see your spaces as you live in them every day. We can’t help you unless we see the natural state of the way you are currently functioning in the space.
Do I need to be there for the entire process?
Yes, we prefer to work with you to sort through your items. But if you have little time available we could work through your things and then organize them while you go about your life. This will cut down on the amount that you will learn from the process and is not ideal.
What will happen to my items I no longer want?
We will remove one carload of items per session and donate them to charitable organizations. If larger items or larger loads need to be removed those will be arranged separately.
How long will a session last?
Sessions are between three and six hours in length. Any shorter and it will take much longer to make any progress. Depending on teh items we are sorting, the process can also be emotionally draining.
What about confidentiality?
What is your cancellation policy?
We require 24 hours notice to cancel a session. You will be billed 50% of the agreed upon rate or time scheduled if less than 24 hours notice is given.
What is your availability?
Organizing sessions can be booked with Julie during evenings and weekends only at this time.
What if I want to get my mother/sibling/friend/relative organized? Can I buy them a gift certificate?
We do not offer gift certificates. Wishing someone else was more organized is like wishing they were healthy and gifting them a gym membership. The gift might not be appreciated in the spirit it was gifted. However, you can purchase a package on behalf of someone else if we are all in agreement that they really do want to get organized.
